Carrie Underwood Sings A Cappella 'America the Beautiful' After Inaugural Flub

The long line-up of artists who were going to perform in the presidential swearing-in ceremony for Donald Trump in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Monday, January 20, including Carrie Underwood, was due to take center stage after he was sworn into office to embark on his second term as the 47th president of the United States. But an unplanned technical snag delayed the proceeding, forcing her to stand away from the microphone for a minute and a half before her song could begin.

Originally, Underwood was set to perform with The Armed Forces Chorus and the United States Naval Academy Glee Club; her performance was even slotted to appear before Trump's swearing-in, according to the original plan. The singer, surprised at the unfortunate turn of events, did an impromptu performance, breaking into a show-stopping a cappella rendition of "America the Beautiful." Seeking the audience's help, she requested, "If you know the words, help me out here," as the audience sang the patriotic song.

Underwood Says She's Honored to Perform at the Ceremony

Ahead of the event, Underwood released a statement expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a significant occasion. “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future," she shared.

Star-Studded Lineup at the Inauguration Festivities

Underwood was among the slew of performers scheduled to take part in the opening events. Others set to perform included Lee Greenwood, the Village People, Nelly, Rascal Flatts, Kid Rock, Gavin DeGraw, Jason Aldean, and Parker McCollum, among many more who will complete the moment in history with their musical contributions.

Mixed Reactions from Fans and the Public

News of Underwood's participation brought widespread admiration and backlash in equal measure. While many praised her vocal talent and patriotic spirit, others, notably members of the LGBTQ+ community, felt let down by her decision to perform at Trump's inauguration. Underwood has previously voiced support for same-sex marriage, publicly backing the cause in 2012 years before its nationwide legalization in 2015. Given Trump's policies and campaign stance on LGBTQ+ rights, some fans criticized her involvement in the event.

Upcoming Concert Special Highlights Underwood's Las Vegas Residency

Outside of the swearing-in, Underwood has been working on her music. She recently released a trailer for her upcoming concert special, Carrie Underwood: Reflection, featuring her ongoing successful Las Vegas residency. The special will air on Disney+ and Hulu this Friday, January 24, and her residency will end on April 12.
