Eugenio Derbez Apologizes to Selena Gomez After Backlash Over ‘Emilia Pérez’ Criticism
Mexican actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez has publicly apologized to Selena Gomez after his controversial comments about her performance in the Netflix musical film Emilia Pérez. He had earlier given this critique during an appearance on the Hablando de Cine podcast.

Derbez Criticizes Gomez’s Spanish Performance
In the podcast, Derbez did not hold back his opinion on Gomez’s portrayal of Jessi del Monte in the Jacques Audiard-directed movie. Specifically, he targeted her Spanish dialogue, describing it as “indefensible.”
"Selena is indefensible," said Derbez, remembering how audiences reacted against the film when it played. "Every time a scene with her came up, people looked at each other and asked, 'What is this?'" He also agreed with host Gaby Meza's observation that Gomez's lack of fluency in Spanish probably prevented her from giving a deeply shaded performance.
Selena Gomez Responds With Grace
Gomez, known for her roles in Only Murders in the Building and her successful music career, addressed the criticism directly on TikTok. In a measured response, she wrote, “I understand where you are coming from. I’m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. It doesn’t take away from the work and heart I put into this movie.”
She also defended her fans, arguing with Derbez’s implication that her supporters contributed to the controversy. “Do not ever say my fans are the problem for standing up for me,” Gomez added.
Derbez Issues a Public Apology
Following the backlash, Derbez took to TikTok to express his regret. In an open letter, he acknowledged the hurt caused by his comments and praised Gomez’s work. “I truly apologize for my careless comments — they are indefensible and go against everything I stand for,” he wrote. “As Latinos, we should always support one another. There’s no excuse. I was wrong, and I deeply admire your career and kind heart.”
About Emilia Pérez
Emilia Pérez explores the transformation of cartel boss Manitas del Monte, played by Sofía Gascón, who leaves the criminal underworld to undergo gender reassignment surgery and become the titular character. The film combines musical elements with genres like rock, pop, and rap, all performed in Spanish. Gomez stars alongside Zoe Saldaña in this unique cinematic venture.
The controversy surrounding Gomez’s performance has added an unexpected layer of attention to the film, emphasizing the challenges of cross-cultural storytelling and the importance of support within the Latino community.
